Studying in United Kingdom (UK) is one of the most popular choices for international students worldwide with UK being second only to the USA in terms of attracting students. UK higher education institutions have a strong reputation for providing numerous facilities and flexibilities to their students through excellent systems.

The UK offers much more to its international students in comparison to any other English-speaking country.  The UK consists of three countries, England, Wales and Scotland. Together they exhibit considerable diversity in terms of population density, cost of living, people and culture, flora and fauna, physical features and climate. People from almost every community reside in the UK and form an important part of British society.

British educational qualifications are greatly respected and universally trusted across the globe. UK universities and colleges provide individual attention to all students. They respect individual rights to culture and community. The UK has nearly 96 universities and several colleges that offer higher education. Students are eligible to apply to UK colleges/universities after (or on the way to) obtaining the required UK educational qualifications or their equivalent in any other country.

Here we look at the top reasons one should go to study in the UK.

Great International Reputation: The major universities in UK have a major international reputation as four of the top six universities in the world are in the UK according to recent rankings. With a long history of teaching through top colleges, UK has for a significant period of time held an important position in the minds of students aiming to study abroad. In 2009, nearly 468,000 international students pursued their education in the UK, a fact that holds testimony to the country’s strong position as a study abroad option.

Major Destination for International Students: UK universities and colleges seriously consider an international student’s qualifications, work experience and prior learning and give importance to every merit of the student. Various small colleges offer higher education in areas such as agriculture, music and fine arts. Technical colleges or colleges of Further Education are located mostly in large or medium towns with at times nearly 10,000 students per campus.

Good Quality Education: The UK education system and the quality of education it provides are noted and valued across the globe. To ensure maintenance of high standards and quality, independent organizations inspect and accredit educational institutions across the country. Although almost all institutions in the UK are committed to maintaining high quality in the programs they offer, the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education conducts independent audits on a regular basis. The QAA ensures that UK educational institutions are offering education, qualifications and awards of appropriate standards and acceptable quality.

Lower Education Costs: In comparison to the USA and other higher education destination countries, the UK is a cheaper option for international students. Generally speaking, a typical program in the US would cost around $25,000 per year while in the UK the same would cost somewhere between £6,000 and £7,000 per year. International students are required to plan a proper budget so that their education is sufficiently funded until course completion. UK policymakers from time to time check what it costs an international student to study in the UK, so that means of reducing the financial burden on the student may be found. Pursuing an undergraduate degree in the UK would generally cost between £4,000 and £12,000, while a postgraduate degree would set you back by £4,000–£30,000.

Work Opportunities: An international student in the UK is permitted to work about 20 hours per week during academic sessions. During holidays, though, you have the option to work full time. Students are generally advised to inform their advisors before starting any type of work. Though working part time makes it easier to meet expenses, depending totally on work income to pay for tuition and living expenses would not be advisable for an international student.

Scholarships and Loans: International students face the biggest challenge in finding Scholarships. They must work hard on preparing outstanding application packages for every scholarship they apply for. Students should research various Scholarships to understand which ones really suit their needs and fulfils their ambition. Recently British Council stated that it would invest one million pounds on Indian students and also colleges like Imperial College London have expanded their Scholarships.

Culture and People: The UK is full of many different cultures and people, another reason why international students are interested in coming to study here. With big cities, rural towns and villages, modern and historical architecture, the UK is a diverse and exciting place to explore. Studying in the UK not only broadens professional horizons but also teaches students to respect diverse cultures and to coexist with people of different nationalities and religions.
