Mr. Praveen Sharma, DIRECTOR,
Pearl Academy of Fashion, New Delhi explains what it takes to
be in the limelight
Q. Tell us about the prospects on completing a course in fashion designing. Graduates from top Fashion and Design institutes can work as Fashion Designers in the Apparel Industry and related lifestyle sectors, as Fashion Coordinators/Fashion Stylists, Brand Designers, Visual Merchandisers in Retail Stores, Product Developers in Design Merchandising. The salaries commanded by these graduates are excellent and chances of growth are very good. Q. What are the best institutes that an aspirant should target? The top institutes for fashion design as per ranking by Hindustan Times are NIFT Delhi and Pearl Academy of Fashion, Delhi. Other good institutes are NIFT Chennai, NIFT Hyderabad, and NIFT Mumbai. Pearl Academy of Fashion centres at Jaipur and Chennai are also good.
The field of fashion design covers a wide gamut. Students can develop their careers in women’s wear, men’s wear, kid’s wear, sports wear, knitwear, intimate apparel etc. One can also develop exclusively in Indian wear. Accessories design is another upcoming field which offers a lot of potential. Other allied areas include fashion merchandising, jewellery design, footwear design, textile design, fashion retailing etc. Q. Apart from creativity, what is the quotient that is required to become successful in the field of fashion? Creativity is of course a prerequisite but it wouldn’t be sufficient in itself for success. For success one also needs to have passionate curiosity to continuously explore and understand, vivid imagination, ability to assess one’s own work in an objective manner, ability to communicate across disciplines in an organization and convert one’s ideas into priorities for the organization or client, ability to work with the production team through all stages, business acumen and global awareness. Q. How can we determine the rate of success in this field? With increasing competition, success will be increasingly difficult to come by. In the past creativity and talent were passport to success, but now one needs to have several more qualities. But for those who are working with commitment and sincerity success will come sooner or later as the market is also expanding very fast. Add Comment CommentsYou may also like to read
