Game Designing as a Career
Game Designing is what one
can call a new age career. The entertainment business may be centuries
old, but the gaming industry has been making it's significance felt
only for a little less than three decades. And when we talk about
India alone, the figure drops down to only a decade or so! India's
gaming industry has only taken a start and is limited to making
arcade-ish games for mobile phones and online games for PC's. The
other large chunk of games falls into the educational category. Owing
to this, career prospects for game designers is rather limited at
present in India, but practically endless in the future.
The gaming industry employs expertise from many fields as many games are simulations or emulations of real world entities. Racing and casino games are good examples. Games like video poker have very few things which can distinguish them from real world machines. Cars featured in racing games try to use believable physics systems to give users a goos sense of speed. Similarly, for every other aspect of a game including programming and the artwork, specialists are not required. Thus getting this industry not only demands some specialization, but general understanding of other aspects too. There aren't too many reputed institutes in India offering courses in game designing. The National Institute of Design offers a two and a half year course in Game Design. People who have pursued B.E/ B.Tech/ B.Des/ B.Arch/ B.Int.Des/ BFA/BVC/ B.Litt/ Graduation in Commn. It also provides training in 3D modelling softwares like 3DS Max and MAYA.
