The launch of Meta University in the academic session 2012-13 looks ambiguous. Jamia Milia Islamia somehow got approval from its constitutional bodies but other constituents – JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University, DU (Delhi university) and IIT-D (Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi) are still at the initial phase of planning. While DU and Jamia officials are expecting a delayed launch of Meta University, JNU has expressed its inability to start the project in 2012.
Union Minister, Human Resource Development, Kapil Sibal had proposed the concept of Meta University earlier this year, which will be run on pilot basis jointly by Jamia, IIT-D, JNU and DU. Under this concept, students can opt from study modules offered by various participating universities and opt for program offered by these institutes jointly.
The courses were decided to be launched this academic year. Though the new academic session is scheduled to commence in 2 weeks, all institutes except Jamia are still working on the changes. DU officials revealed that management will call a meeting of the executive and academic council this week, where issue of credit transfer among universities and meta university will be discussed.
Sources from Jamia expressed that the university is waiting for its other partners to launch the project where the 4 universities will be offering joint degree programs. Jamia has successfully got all approvals. Jamia will offer PG Diploma in Public Health.
JNU however has expressed inability in joining the board this year. Sources from JNU revealed that the university will be prepared for the 2013-14 session. It is consulting seeking approvals from JNU’s executive and academic councils.
