Stephen's receives 22,000 applications; cut offs likely to rise

St Stephens College has received a record 22,000 applications for admissions this year, the highest it has ever received. About 2,500 students who have secured above 97% have applied to the institute. Applicants included the CBSE class XII topper Mohammad Ismat.

A large number of students who secured high marks in their class XII boards have applied to the college, increasing the competition. Sources revealed that the ratio of candidates who have secured above 97% to each seat is about 1:6.

Officials from the college stated that there had been a significant increase in the number of aspirants scoring above 97%. They added that currently the aspirant per seat ratio has touched 52.

The CBSE topper expressed that it was his dream to study at the college and he has applied for Physics (Honours). Officials from the university revealed that with such large number of applications received, the cut offs are likely to increased, although admission is based on the Class XII marks and an interview.

St. Stephens received 22,000 applications this year, an increase from last years' 21,000.The introduction of the online application process contributed a lot to the increase in number of applications. The college received almost 67% of the applications online, while 40 applications were received from differently -abled candidates.

Officials mentioned that they had received 15,000 applications online, which was more than double the applications received over the counter. They added that the college will encourage students to use the online application procedure from next year in order to reduce the use of paper.

The college received the highest number of applications for the BA (Honours) in English course, which has a ratio of 119 students per seat. It is followed by the economics, which has a ratio of 89.5 candidates per seat. BSc (honours) in mathematics received the highest number of applications among the science courses- 991.

Cutoffs for various programmes will be announced on Wednesday evening, June 20, 2012. The list of candidates who have been selected for interview will also be declared on Friday, June 22, 2012. While interviews will begin on June 25 and go on till Jul 8, 2012, sports trails for admission through sports quota will begin on Tuesday, June 26, 2012.
