Some of the premier institutes for higher education in West Bengal including Calcutta University, Jadhavpur University and Indian institute of management (IIM) - Calcutta are seeking advice on the feasibility to collaborate and set up a Meta university. The concept of ‘Meta University’ was popularized by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has urged development of such universities.

A Meta university will allow a student from a university to access and use resources, such as library, laboratory and faculty from numerous institutes while pursuing one degree course.

The HRD ministry has approved the concept of Meta University to be introduced from this academic year. The system will allow students to transfer credits and thus make cross-university education easy and flexible.

The three institutes will be the first to introduce the concept in the eastern region. The concept encourages partnerships with Jadhavpur University, IIM-C and Calcutta University. The government has selected Jadhavpur University as the nodal university for the eastern region. The tie up will not just allow research programmes at the three institutes, but will also enable them to jointly offer new programmes in areas such as education, environment and public health.
