XAT Paper Pattern:
XAT is a paper-pencil test of 2 hours duration. XAT 2011 had 101 questions as compared to XAT 2010 which had 104.The question paper consists of 3 sections followed by a 20 minute open ended question on a topic, with topics ranging from those of social relevance to abstract topics. The three sections are:
Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning
Data Interpretation and Quantitative Ability
Analytical Reasoning and Decision making
There is a negative marking system where 1 mark is awarded for each correct answer, 0.20 marks are deducted for first 5 wrong answers and 0.25 marks are deducted for subsequent wrong answers.
Verbal Ability (VA) and Logical Reasoning (LR):
This section is very much similar to verbal ability section of CAT however difficulty level for XAT exam is considered to be higher. This is because of the complex language, confusing topics for reading comprehensions and surplus questions based on inferences and verbal reasoning.
Quantitative analysis (QA) and Data Interpretation (DI):
The difficulty level of this section is moderate; however QA and DI section 2011 proved to be full of surprises for XAT applicants. Students need to practice various data representation forms. Even though this section consists of tough questions, there are enough easy to moderately difficult questions for students to attempt. The only task is to find them.
Logical Reasoning (LR) and Decision Making (DM):
Decision making section is one of the unique sections of XAT. The decision making questions in XAT are relatively easier and can be easily attempted. The section is meant to test the business insight of students and decision making abilities on ethical and professional front. Students can expect real life business case studies. You need to know the common business terms and application of reasoning in complex business situations in order to answer the questions. The paper may consist of some of the most difficult questions so the students are suggested to be very alert while making the choice of questions.
Open Ended Question:
This is an essay type question. The essay topic in XAT 2010 was, “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs but not every man's greed” whereas in 2011 the extract given was "wealth of nations". Students are required to give relevant and logical answers by quoting examples from professional or business world if required. Students should spend couple of minutes in framing their answers before jotting it down.
