Archaeology refers to the combination of two words 'archaios' and 'logos' which means ancient things and theory of science. Archaeology deals with the study about past civilization. The study of past civilization is done by analysis and documentation, recovery of historical materials and historical data like landscapes and bio-facts. Since archaeology is of greater importance in conservation of monuments and town planning.


Is it a right career for me?

Archaeology is a perfect career for those people who derive self-satisfaction in discovering a part of history and culture long lost in the dust of time. It is a career that is very much in demand since archaeologists have to spend infinite hours and days camping and undertaking field work at laboratories and in excavation sites. An archaeologist therefore must have the patience to work on a project that may take months and even years to compete.

Few essential skills required for an archaeologist are reading habits, knowledge about past history, excellent penmanship and an analytical and focused mind. In comparison to monetary benefits, fame and recognition are considered more benefit in this field/occupation.


Demand for archaeologists in India:-

India has a rich cultural heritage that can go thousands of years back. A well experienced archaeologist has a perpetual demand to work on new projects of archaeology. Experienced lectures, curators and conservators are highly in demand in the country. Basic Eligibility



Those who want to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology should have studied history as a subject in 10+2.



For degree or post graduate diploma courses in archaeology one should have completed his/her graduation in any discipline. However, graduates in social sciences like sociology, history, anthropology are given a preference.


Like other subjects, archaeology also has a large number of sub-disciplines. One can have a specialization in a particular field after completing the basics of an archaeology course. Some of these specialization areas are characterized by a specific type of material (like archaeobotany, lithic analysis, music), chronological or geographical focus (like Medieval archaeology, Near Eastern archaeology), other thematic areas (like maritime archaeology, battlefield archaeology, landscape archaeology) or a specific archaeological culture or civilization (like Indology, Egyptology).

Some specializations of archaeology are as follows:-


  • Historical archaeology: - It is the study of cultures with some form of writing.
  • Ethnoarchaeology: - It is archaeological study of living people.
  • Experimental archaeology: - It is the application of experimental methods to develop highly controlled observations of processes to create and impact archaeological records.


Archaeometry aims to systematise archaeological measurement by emphasizing application of analytical techniques from physics, chemistry and engineering.

Job Prospects

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is the major recruiter for archaeologists in the country both at the centre and at the state levels as well. Students who are eligible can apply for suitable positions with ASI after qualifying the examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) or by State Public Service Commission’s (SPSC).

After acquiring the required degree, one can apply for lectureship in various universities/Institutes across the country. For this, they have to appear for the Junior Research Fellow (JRF) or the National Eligibility Test (NET) these examinations will be conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

After qualifying in the JRF examination a candidate has the option to pursue a doctorate degree in capacity of a paid research fellowship. For taking up a lectureship position in a particular state, candidates must have to clear the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) of that particular state.

Jobs are offered in both government and private sector museums for the safe upkeep and management of museum artifacts, so the career of an archaeologist is secure. With official designation and well experience a archaeologists can enjoy all the benefits of a normal government employee.

Pay Package:-

As soon as an archaeology student qualifies the JRF examination and all the eligibility criteria he can start earning, a junior research fellow gets Rs. 8,000 per month for duration of two years. Once the candidate gets promoted to the senior research fellow salaries gets increased. The salaries of lecturers are around Rs. 20,000 per month whereas professors earn even higher than this.

After getting into Archaeological Survey of India, the basic pay scale of an assistant archaeologist range between Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 per month. Archaeologists with a doctorate degree usually get suitable positions in the job hierarchy. The monthly salary of the director general of ASI is in somewhere around Rs. 30,000 per month.
