Go Green!

Climate change is a very serious issue that needs our immediate attention. The consequences of abusing the earth for centuries are showing up in the form of ozone depletion, melting of polar ice caps, rise of sea levels and the most significant one is submersion of terrain. With Mauritius being under the threat of submersion very soon, this fear has gripped Indians too. And with scientists predicting the submersion of Bengal by 2030 and Mumbai even before that, the clock of disaster has begun to tick faster than ever before. It's now time for quick damage control and disaster management.   Kasturba Gandhi college in collaboration with Association of British Scholars Hyderabad is organizing a 2 day symposium on the "Chilling Effects of Climate Change to Life." For this, 16th November was chosen for organizing a mini quiz and open forum for interaction with expert panelists headed by Mrs Amala Akinenni, wife of famous South Indian actor Nagarjuna. In spite...

Why Exams?

The term exams finally got over yesterday and life is back to normal once again. Now students can get back to sleeping in classes, bunking, spending time at the canteen or library, discussing things other than books(gossiping :P)! The happiest thing for me is that I don't have to wake up on cold dark mornings to study! I hate winters!   Term exams were held very late this year, they're usually held in Sept or early Oct but due to Diwali and supplementary exams the date was pushed to Nov. Frankly people don't really care about when these exams are conducted coz nobody wants to write them. Girls are usually indifferent coz even if they flunk, the college can do nothing about it. That's the reason most girls don't write them and others who do, just pass on blank pages to invigilators without regret.   Funnily each year first year girls are present in full attendance at the hall, probably coz they're threatened...

Out in the Open!

Andre Agassi in his forthcoming autobiography titled "Open" has made some very shocking confessions about his life. These dark and murky revelations have baffled tennis enthusiasts across the world. The eight time grand slam winner's confession of using the drug crystal meth in 1997 has raised a lot of eyebrows even in the sporting community. The WADA is said to be keen on investigating the case and wants to take action against him if necessary. By baring it all Agassi has certainly 'open'ed a pandora's box. If things don't go his way, he may even be stripped off his titles, which would be extremely humiliating for a player of his rank. Agassi has surely dug his own grave by deciding not to carry the secrets to his grave!    In the book Agassi has also commented on his popular lion mane hairstyle he sported during the 1990s which had made him a fashion idol. He has admitted that it was actually a...

Cartoons have lost their charm!

I feel sorry for kids these days who are forced to watch cartoons in Hindi or regional languages. Cartoon network, Disney channel and Nickelodeon all telecast cartoons only in Hindi these days. India is not a nation of English illiterates, like China or Japan, we can follow English well and don't need our cartoons to be dubbed! The Hindi that is spoken is so poor that its quite difficult to understand what the character is trying to say. Its not amusing at all to watch Popeye profess his love for Olive in Hindi or watch episodes of Dragon Ball Z in Telugu. Except for South park (the popular American show) no other cartoon is telecast in English these days and maybe in a couple of years they'll even manage to translate South park into Hind(including the slangs!), the thought of which is very terrifying!  Also its sad that CN thinks Indian kids cant understand their kind of cartoons, maybe that's the reason there's only Ramayana and Hanuman that is...

CAT and all that- Part 2

It's that time of the year again when all management institutes begin to conduct their entrance exams. Its testing time literally for students who are aiming to make it to the prestigious B schools in India. And this year with recession hitting shores, most people who are left with no job are looking determined to pursue an MBA to spruce up their CV making the competition fiercer. Of all the Mocks and replica tests I've been taking for some months now, I think in terms of difficulty CAT ranks first among all entrances, none can beat its high standard and level of difficulty. IIFT, FMS and XAT come second in line. XAT is unarguably on par with CAT in terms of difficulty. A notable feature about IIFT is its non-uniform allocation of marks per section, the weightage is changed every year. FMS is a top priority for every MBA aspirant, one because it ranks first among B Schools and two because of it's astonishingly low fee (it is 19,000 p.a. when compared to the IIMs which stand at 9...

The best phase of life!!

Just ten days into mid-term vacations and I've already begun to feel bored. I'm really missing college and its people. The busy classrooms, the noisy canteen, quiet library, the lawns which are always buzzing with gossip and catfights, all of it. Its strange how people you hardly know on the first day become such thick friends by the end of three years, so much that we actually begin to talk and sometimes even ***** about them. I genuinely dread the day I'll have to bid goodbye to all these lovely people. To simply think that you wont see a close bud sitting by your side or having to realize that you wont ever be able to eat at the canteen with friends or walk back home with them in itself is so painful, I can only imagine how it will actually feel when it happens. At school by the time we learn to tie our shoelaces and say a few phrases we are forced to bid adieu, but college is different, it is beyond juvenile shenanigans and fragile attachments, its more about strong bonding....

A Day @ Deloitte!

The moment I saw the Deloitte campus, I was overwhelmed with delight! It all began on a Friday morning when this company decided to come for campus placements to our college. Obviously all the students were extremely excited about being placed in a top notch MNC and its an added bonus when the company in question is rated the best place to launch a career. The HR, the vice president of the organization and some more employees were all present that day to interview us and this gave us cold feet. Every company begins by showing you all the good things about it before it gets you face to face with the ugly facts and this company was no different.  They began by giving us a virtual tour of their campus and showed us the unit, EBOS  in which we are supposed to work. EBOS extensively deals with billing and follow up of clients health insurance. The AV showed images of monolithic buildings, amazing cafeterias and an enchanting work atmosphere. Deloitte has only two...

Campus, CAT and all that!

With just four days left for our mid-term holidays to commence, the campus is bubbling with excitement. Everyone is looking forward to the month long October break. The holiday mood has already set in and nobody is actually willing to attend classes anymore. While some found this a good time to sneak out to watch 'What's your Rashee' and 'Wake up Sid', the others are just whiling away time in the canteen and outside college. Most students have two really good excuses to give if caught bunking, one being the coming up supplementary exams and the other rains in the city. With heavy rains lashing Hyderabad from the past one week, its an excuse which works best for everyone. Also placements are commencing this Friday, the first company to visit our campus will be Deloitte for recruitment to their tax department. The expectation to get a job this year is extremely low. Only the exceptionally good are expected to get selected since several top companies have already conveyed their...

Draw The Line!

So many times while in school I had made errors when doing map pointing which I now realize were not simple mistakes but unpardonable blunders! Geography was something i always disliked, I hardly scored in that area, probably because I never took the pains to go through an atlas, it seemed like a boring exercise to me, especially the World map, going through it was and still is a big pain. Its so senseless to remember the exact locations of places which you know you'll never visit in your lifetime lol. I'd usually mug everything before the exam only to forget it soon after. The map of India was comparatively easy but memorizing all the rivers, the deserts (thankfully there is only one), the states & their capitals(the numbers kept changing every year man!), the UTs, the mountain ranges, was a tedious task. When it came to marking the seven sisters in the East I'd always mess up the little map as everything had to be crammed in little space. Whatever little liking I had for...

Dandiya Revelry at KGCW!!

A Dandiya fest was organized in the college on Friday by students of final year. The idea was to make this Navratri special so that students who are passing out this year could cherish these college memories forever. The plan to have the event was made only a day before but everything fell in place quickly and there wasn't any major difficulty. Having a Dandiya event during daytime might not sound fun, but believe me everyone had a blast; girls seemed extremely excited about playing Dandiya with their friends. The mood was upbeat, spirits were soaring and the atmosphere was just electrifying. The venue was our college lawn and the theme for the fest was ethnic and all girls turned up in their best on that day. While some wore colorful ghagra-cholis and sarees, others wore embellished kurtis with sparkling jewelry.   Dandiya and Garba are dance forms which can be easily mastered. Some first timers who hadn't played before too didn't take long to match steps with the...
