FRESHER'S BASH-2009
... Quite often does it happen that we appreciate the actual value of a certain thing only when we see its end nearing . . Nostalgia gripped all of us third year students at the recently held history department’s fresher’s bash! I mean wasn’t it just a few months back that we all were at the same place, feeling awkward, apprehensive, tongue-tied and scared to death at the thought of facing our seniors and getting ragged! It indeed felt weird to be standing there as super seniors and welcoming the newbies to the department. Suddenly we all felt “grown up”. A feeling that isn’t particularly a happy one! But once the party started all such thoughts got drowned with the music and we all got into the groove. One by one the juniors who were all dressed up in shades of black and white (the theme was monochrome) took centre stage and introduced themselves as whackily as we demanded! So while a dynamic surd guy was very...

The Hunger Fighter
..................... Dr. Norman Borlang- not exactly a familiar name for our generation- but that doesn’t diminish his stature as a dedicated humanitarian. Friends, he passed away recently at the ripe age of 95, a fulfilled life and it was in death that his achievements came to light for us. He was a modern day messiah who worked tirelessly to feed the hungry millions of the developing world including our country. The early to mid 1960’s saw acute food shortages in the country both due to manmade and natural causes. The then government sought help from the USA and the Rockefeller and the ford foundation came forward to help. They had successfully demonstrated new agricultural techniques since 1944 in Mexico and the results were astounding. Dr. Borlang came to India in 1965 and a new chapter in our agricultural history began. He taught Indian farmers to experiment with the wheat crop and very soon the production reached an exorbitant level. ...

"ITS COMPLICATED"
.............................................................. Bollywood movies are synonymous with candy floss romance . . . If there is a college, there has to be a handsome hunk in it who meets the prettiest lass in the world and after the audience has its share of lover’s tiffs and a generous dose of melodrama (read family opposition) with a lecherous villain or a scheming vamp making things all the more difficult for the love birds, both of them end up together because we as a nation are suckers for happy endings! But all this is a far cry from the reality. Things aren’t so straightforward and uncomplicated for the facebook generation- a fact made evident by more and more relationship statuses reading “it’s complicated” So where in exactly lies the complication? I’d say in the simple truth that today’s youth wants relationships not love! No matter how clichéd it may sound, none of us can actually...

one burden OFF young backs . . .
..................................... A really remarkable and long overdue educational reform has finally seen the light of the day! YES! The class 10 th board examinations will be a thing of the past for the 2010-11 academic session and this year too, though examinations will be held, there will be grading instead of granting marks. An initiative precipitated by the present HRD minister, Shri Kapil Sibbal, it definitely spells relief in bold letters for thousands of stressed out students and their worried to death parents! The students of classes 9 th and 10 th shall appear for internal examinations conducted and evaluated by their respective schools and 60% marks will be reserved for this. The remaining 40% marks will be given under the continuous and comprehensive evaluation system (CCE) which will assess the students for diverse qualities such as social skills, conversation abilities, project works, debates, physical education etc meaning there...

tasty scoops!!
..................................................... Show me a human being who doesn’t like ice creams and I’ll show you a demented creature! Ice creams! One of life’s greatest pleasures for old and young alike. It is a food for all seasons all moods and all age groups! I would like to share some really delectable scoops with you guys- we have an Indian chain of ice creams- ‘Giani’s” which had humble beginnings in the 1940’s in the walled city of Delhi. Over a period of time, good quality and goodwill has made it thrive most deservingly! Today in the age of multinational food brands hogging up most of our market space, Giani’s holds its fort strongly on the basis of both its quality as well as affordability factor. From a very modest beginning, today it has fanned out all over the city and is indeed very good value for money. So if you happen to pass by Giani’s anytime soon, keep...

WE and the other part of US!!
......................................................... Often while having a conversation with myself, i experience this rather disturbing trend. I don’t know if it is usual though if it is, then it’d be a great solace. I start thinking about something and then my chain of thoughts is disrupted by totally contradictory views. Suppose i begin with thinking about what i am going to say to a friend who has been acting weird lately, before i realise i drift into thinking about how i may have behaved differently that in turn might have led to the change in the other person’s behaviour. One moment i completely loathe him for being inconsiderate and mean and the next instant i am full of hatred for myself! And then while i jump from one conclusion to another, i usually doze off!! I saw something similar happening the other day at a debate i attended. The interjector asked the speaker what he spoke about in a roundabout fashion. the...

STYLE UP
................................................... It is interesting how far something seemingly as insignificant as a haircut helps you stand apart in a crowd of thousands! For some, a classic crew cut is all that they can manage to keep the heat at bay and thus a haircut is nothing but a means to achieve that end. Although some look really cool even with that scanty hair covering their scalps . . . Then there are a few (especially guys) who are strictly forbidden to grow their hair longer (disapproving moms and grand moms are good at this!) and thus unfortunately have to chop off their dreams to look like their rock idols. Some are bound by the censorious rules of the institution they attend and so have to keep their tresses at a conservative level. But then DU isn’t about rules when it comes to fashion! Here, the wackier you are, more are your number of admirers! Of course, that doesn’t imply that you land up in college...

The H1N1 Hungama!
I am so sick and tired of this ceaseless discussion and the general palaver surrounding the swine flu. I mean fine . . . it is a serious issue and we all need to protect ourselves and our loved ones from it but there happens to be a limit to everything and this time all of us have gone way overboard. Such unprecedented degree of media hype though helped create awareness initially and led to the consequent adoption of a fair range of precautions. But it has now become a source to perpetuate the myths attached to this disease. I am sure a lot of you share my opinion and are just as much dying to see a news bulletin without any mention of the swine flu or its deadly virus as i am. Now what i find amusing is the kind of hilarious effects it has brought about. I love it when people get paranoid! More so, when its completely uncalled for. So...

A RAINY DAY:)
Remember those elementary school essay competitions or that inter house painting contest both of which unfailingly had “a rainy day” as one of the topics?? I always considered myself suffering from the “2-left hands” syndrome meaning thereby that no matter how much effort i put in to draw , say a dog, the end result would invariably be a creature resembling a distant member of the octopus family. My ultimate embarrassment came in the form of this drawing competition i sat for but was disqualified in spite of spending an hour trying to present a perfect picture of a rainy day because my teacher felt i had depicted an area inflicted by some natural disaster.. So naturally after such unsuccessful trials i finally stifled my Da-vinci-ish dreams with...

Are You Able To Deal With People?
My dad once told me that in life you need to learn to deal with all kinds of people. This was way back . . . when I was as dumb as a 5 th grader usually is and was 'maha-upset' over being forced to sit roll number wise with a sad looking pot bellied fellow who went on to become my first boyfriend! That is an age when you are far removed from the complexities that thrive in our everyday existence. An age where the entire class is your best friend and petty fights over broken pencils and lost erasers make your day interestingly worthwhile. I didn't take my dad seriously back then. Even though I kinda liked the way it sounded and needless to say even used it verbatim (albeit in a patronizing tone) over my juniors! I was naive enough to believe that so what if I...
