Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
He was a star. She is still an icon. And together, in the 1958 classic adaptation of the play CAT on a Hot Tin Roof, Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor were just the thing the doctor ordered.
Set in the southern state of Mississippi, this is the story of the Pollitt family drama that unfolds with the news that the patriarch of the family Harvey "Big Daddy" Pollitt (Burl Ives) is quickly dying of cancer after it was thought that he was fit as a fiddle. Brick Pollitt (Paul Newman) is his younger son who, at thirty, is an alcoholic, nurturing a childless farce of a marriage to Margret "Maggie/Maggie the Cat" Pollitt (Elizabeth Taylor). They're trying to celebrate Big Daddy's 65th birthday amidst the din that his grandchildren-- from his older son- Cooper "Gooper" Pollitt (Jack Carson) are creating all in the effort to impress the old man and have him leave his 28,000 acre plantation to him and his belligerent wife Mae Flynn Pollitt (Madeleine Sherwood).
Things turn sour when Brick refuses to be a part of the celebrations and reveals to his father that he is indeed dying and has little time left. There's a lot of squabbling and bickering. The family, which was already torn to shreds because of malice and ill feeling between the brothers and their families, is now falling to pieces entirely with the question of the will.
What will happen to this proud family from the south? Who will Big Daddy leave his fortunes to? Will he reconcile the differences he has pent up with almost every member of his household?
With a brilliant cast, director Richard Brooks is all about perfection. There's a lot of chemistry between all the members of the cast and that makes it a pleasure to watch seeing as the hostile dynamic really comes out in the 107 minute long film. Each scene has been shot with care and the viewer is gripped throughout the film, with each twist and turn getting more and more interesting. The story all takes place during the course of one evening but, to be safe, i'll call it a day. Though the music isn't an original score since there was Musicians' strike in Hollywood at the time, there is still enough to call it good music.
It's a classic and you HAVE to watch it.
