College has finally BEGUN!! :)

Anticipation is not the word that i would like to use here because it was too early in the morning, but there was a sense of something round the corner that had made itself very much a part of the atmosphere in the room. That that something around the corner was, indeed, a someone, an economics professor, to be more precise makes the whole point a little more valid than before.

The first day of college is not something that would win any award for Excellence or Extra-ordinariness, but it is one of those very poignant events; at least for the first week. Specials being chosen, we were subjected to the first blast of new and less-teacher-ish professors. They are those beings that make it their business to impart something that is more than just the knowledge that they have been assigned to dissipate. These are the troopers. They are the very personifications of the words "senior college". They are the men and women who bravely, happily and with the air of being rather nonplussed with the tepid response go on to splatter a class with a long list of books that offer enlightened reading to the students of the subject.

The term "student of (for example) economics" is now used rather threateningly. The disturbing frequency with which we are charged with being disciples of a larger science and hence, by default, enthusiasts of it is not a matter of comfort. The expectations have been raised like a pole vault challenge that would spite even the indomitable Yelena Isinbayeva.

And so we trudge into the morning lectures with the absolute dejection of having been hustled out of bed that early in the morning to face a good natured man bouncing at the front of the class armed with the apparently happy misconception that there is something wonderful about teaching Arts students mathematics!

Though all will be well by the time the year rumbles into the end of the first term. We will have conned reluctant body clocks into believing that sunrise is the beginning of the day and we will have gotten used to parking lots already clogged with bikes by the time the clock strikes 8. There will be mad dashes to classrooms and curses at the habitual bench being taken over by some strange apparition of a student that you never bothered to notice before.

There will be breaks that will roll endlessly into more breaks even though the new time-table very clearly states that there is a little slot now when you must be in a classroom, doing what you woke up in the morning intending not to do.

We're already looking into the prissy faces of juniors that will have to be taught that they're called "juniors" for a reason and walking into college with that air of: been there, done that is so much more fun than the lost look of a deer caught in headlights that the pitiful little brats have...

This is FINALLY the beginning of a whole new year! Three months of vacation make homecoming truly sweet!
