Mama Mia! (film)

I've always been a sucker for a good musical. And to be treated to a musical of these stellar proportions is something that is entirely different! Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, Mama Mia! is a musical extravaganza that's good enough for everyone!

Based on the Broadway production of the same name, this Meryl Streep- Pierce Brosnan- Stellan Skarsgard- Colin Firth- (among many others)- starrer is sure to win your heart whether you like it or not! The film is set in Greece, on the eve of Sophie's (Amanda Seyfried) wedding. Sophie does not know who her father is but has a good idea who it might be. So she sends out invites to the three men that could be the man she's looking for to complete her perfect wedding to Sky (Dominic Cooper) without her mother, Donna's (Meryl Streep) knowledge.

There's chaos and pandemonium as best friends of the bride and the mother collide with the three prospective fathers. Fun follows as the characters interact. Sophie, at her bachelor-ette-party decides to find out which of the three; Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgard- of Pirates of the Caribbean fame...you know, William "Bootstrap Bill" Turner...father to Orlando Bloom's character...man covered in slimy sea-stuff), Harry "Head Banger" Bright (Colin Firth) or Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan); will walk her down the aisle the next day. She's got more questions than answers at the end of the night and three people who're going to give her away instead of the one she wanted. What happens next? Will Donna get involved? Will she figure out who her father is?

Though this sort of a dilemma is a little funny and unimaginable when you're stuck in the middle of a very Indian context, looking at something this hippie and American. The confusion and hyperactivity are overtones throughout the 108 minute musical...but i haven't gotten to the best part yet! The movie bursts into ABBA songs all the time and i mean all the time! And it's amazing!

There's a song for every situation! ABBA supplies some of their greatest hits to this film and all of them have been sung by the stars themselves! So though its a tad funny to see Pierce Brosnan sing (funnier to hear it, actually), you're made an ABBA fan for at least a little bit after you watch this one! I was never too fond of their pieces; unless it was something that was adapted for the school choir to sing; but for days after this movie i was singing Super Trouper!

It's a must watch for the family, especially if you/your parents/family has grown up around ABBA! Gotta watch, i say!

P.S.: Don't go thinking that this is some shallow stuff! There's a lot that you can 'learn' too!
