Live Chat 1 - Gejo Sreenivasan of IMS gives advice to CAT aspirants
Dia - What should I focus on in these last few days of CAT?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - During last few days it is very important to keep the confidence high. Don’t do anything that can get you in a fix. Most students try to solve a lot of question papers. That should be avoided. Studying hard with a gap is needed so that your mind is not clogged up
Oindrila - can u please tell me what should i do in the last 3 days?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - revise; take just 1 more test on Thursday and do a through feedback on Friday n relax the entire sat. When your revising in the last days, focus more on the topics on which CAT asks regularly like remainder them.
Rita, Dia – what are the sections that I should focus on in the last few days?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - the weaker section(s). You have to revise all the sections having more focus on the weaker ones
Dia - any specifics on the negative marking? Have heard its 0.25 & is incremental. Also that its 0.33 for 1 markers & 0.66 for 2 markers?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - its generally 1/4 or 1/3 of the marks allotted to a question.
Venkat - Hi I want to appear for entrance of MAT and ICET When Should I expect the notification for MAT and ICET.
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - you can visit our website www.imsindia.com, we keep notifying regularly about all the tests.
Dood - Hi Gejo, what is least cut off of each section or aggregate to get a call from any IIM or other Top B Schools?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS – the IIMs have specified the minimum requirement for each section and the overall in their bulletin.
Sandy - what do you suggest on timing....should we distribute time equally among all three sections or should it depend upon difficulty levels?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - one would generally keep the time distribution equally for all the section, but if any changes, would depend on the nature of the paper.
Rita - How do I improve on my data interpretation?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS- one should make a list of all the important. formulae and keep revising it regularly
Oindrila - And any other last minute tips?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - the most imp thing that i suggest to my students is a proper rest.one tries to a lot of things during the last few days .that should be avoided. Don’t do late night studies. Take a proper sleep.
Harsha – for DI how do you choose which sets to work on? The more logical ones or the calculation intense ones
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - if you are fast with calculations then one should start with the calc. based set as it is easy to identify an easy question as compared to an LR based
Amit, Loknath - How many full practice tests should I do in these days?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - 1 or 2 but not more.
Aashima - My scores are highly variable, reach 98 sometimes and lag at 70 too.. What should I do?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - a through feedback of the tests in which you scored less is suggested, that will help to indentify the your mistakes and weakness
Gururaj - Which institutes don't look for sectional cut offs and which does?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - all this info rgd the institutes you can find on our site www.imsindia.com
Sandy - if i know my one section is weak should I give more time to it during the cat
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - that will depend on how difficult that is section on that day, but don’t attempt it as the last section. Do it as a second section
Aashima - I guess problem is identifying correct questions in DI and QA.. Any trick for that?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS – identification of correct questions in DI + ps helps you on your accuracy n hence minimising the penalty.
Oindrila - how much does early 90 percentiles in terms of a 4 marks paper translate into?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS – in cat 2007 a 90 p.c. translates to a score of around 72.
Amit - Can u please tell me how to maximize the overall percentile in CAT
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - focus well on all the three section, that itself would help to maximize your overall score.

Oindrila - lately my maths section has been suffering badly in my mock CATs, so how can i minimise my negatives in that section...since I am not able to crack many questions in the allocated 45mins for quant...I make guesses in maths towards the end of the time. n the guesses are mostly wrong...but its very tempting to do them.
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - the cutoff in quant usually is not high as compared to other sections. One need to minimise on the negatives. Solve less, solve accurate. That surely helps to clear maths cutoff. Refrain from guessing, you lose marks for the questions you’ve solved correctly and that’s killing.
Sandy - in DI do you suggest doing all the questions of a set or try doing easier ones of as many sets as possible?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - that should be done if you can identify them. if calculation based sets its easier to locate, but in LR based set question that have additional data will usually take more time.
Ajith - For someone taking CAT, what are the 3 most important things to remember?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - don’t get stuck by spending too much time on one question, dont neglect any section in favour of an easier one, and lastly believe in your ability. Its very imp to keep your nerves on the day. Cat is a test of ur decision making abilities and also of your mental strength. Both are equally imp on the day.
Sandy - what do you suggest for RCs, I usually do it at last....is there a better way to go about it?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - try doing them somewhere in the middle of the test as they usually demand time n concentration.
Ajith - Any surprises expected in CAT this time?
Gejo Sreenivasan - IMS - well, your guess is as good as mine.
