Mumbai University What next after Class 12th?
Mumbai University has announced a number of new Degree courses open for student admissions from the academic year 2009-10. The new courses on offer include B.Sc in Forensics Science, Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) course in Marathi and other PG level courses like PG Diploma in Forensic and Related Law Management and PG Diploma in Digital and Cyber Forensic and Law Management.
The B.Sc in Forensic Science course will be a fully aided course and have a capacity for 40 students. The B.Sc curriculum will be at par with the global level. Plans are in the pipeline to introduce M.Sc and Ph.D in Forensic Science in phases.
As for the BMM course in Marathi, Eleven colleges in Mumbai including Ramnarain Ruia College; Dadar, Siddharth College; Fort, DG Ruparel College; Matunga and Ambedkar College; Matunga have shown interest in commencing the course from the next academic session.
Mumbai University also held a career fair on June 4th and 5th, 2009 to enable students to choose their careers wisely. The career fair is being organized at the Fort Campus of the varsity. It will also be conducted at Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. On June 5th, the varsity will conduct a special session in the western suburbs at the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) at the Mumbai University's Kalina campus.
Special focus will be given on courses like Management, Bachelor of Mass Media and Bachelor of Management Studies. Students can also know more about the courses offered by the Institute of Distance and Open Learning of the varsity. Apart from having course information about what to opt for after passing HSC exams, the exhibition will also have stalls of various colleges affiliated to the varsity. Students can also avail the educational and physiological counseling session by paying nominal fee.
On the other hand, Students with Low Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exam scores need not despair. You may still accomplish your goal to pursue a regular degree course be it even B.A, B.Sc., B.Com. Colleges are bracing to overcome the effects of students who leave for Vocational and Engineering courses after having gained admission into Arts, Sciences and Commerce Degree courses. Going by last year's numbers, Colleges admit up to 2 to 3 times the actual strength of their Degree course classroom strengths. Officials claim that once MHTCET results are declared, the number of students who actually continue the course after gaining admission in much lesser. Colleges claim that once admission gets over in Professional and Vocational colleges through CET, several seats are left vacant for students who have not scored well. Cut offs can even be as low as 50% for the leftover seats. In conventional B.Sc programmes, cut-offs come down to 45-47%. Even regular arts cut-off can dip to 50%. However, the trend is not observed in B.Com course as the Commerce course has been in demand among students. As an example, last year cut-off ended 62% and 76% for Arts and Science respectively at JaiHindCollege. So Keep your fingers crossed everyone!
Even better news is that the State Government of Maharashtra is likely to grant permission to set up 150 new colleges across the state within a week, With a total intake of over 18,000. All these colleges will have Arts, Commerce and Science faculties. The Government is willing to start new colleges to accommodate all the students who have passed their standard 12 exams. Around 800 applications are said to have been received to start new colleges in the state by different institutions. During scrutiny around only 175 institutions have been found eligible to start new colleges.
For students who are looking for admission into Junior College in Maharastra i.e., 11th or 12th in other words, The Department of School Education of Maharashtra has launched a website for admission to the junior colleges in Maharashtra. The website will start functioning by June 10. Students can apply online for admission through this link: First Year Junior College Admissions
