Cartoons have lost their charm!

Bookmark Share

I feel sorry for kids these days who are forced to watch cartoons in Hindi or regional languages. Cartoon network, Disney channel and Nickelodeon all telecast cartoons only in Hindi these days. India is not a nation of English illiterates, like China or Japan, we can follow English well and don't need our cartoons to be dubbed!

The Hindi that is spoken is so poor that its quite difficult to understand what the character is trying to say. Its not amusing at all to watch Popeye profess his love for Olive in Hindi or watch episodes of Dragon Ball Z in Telugu. Except for South park (the popular American show) no other cartoon is telecast in English these days and maybe in a couple of years they'll even manage to translate South park into Hind(including the slangs!), the thought of which is very terrifying!

Also its sad that CN thinks Indian kids cant understand their kind of cartoons, maybe that's the reason there's only Ramayana and Hanuman that is telecast on CN most hours of the day. Where have cartoons like Captain planet, Swatcats, The mask, Dexter, Flintstones, Powerpuff girls, Jetsons, Adams family and Scooby doo disappeared? Now all that kids get to watch are silly animes or ancient Indian fables. Hannah Montana speaks and even sings Hindi songs! Oh Cmon!

Watching cartoons in English may not help in refining your vocab but it does help you with your fluency in the language. Dubbing has deteriorated the standard of cartoons over the years. What happened to the quality that Cartoon Network had, when I was a kid? Cartoons are longer fun to watch!

Captain planet, Swatcats, The mask, Dexter, Flintstones, Powerpuff girls, Jetsons, Adams family and Scooby doo , Pokemon , etc .... i really miss them all.
Its so disappointing that they all have disappeared.
Dubbing is fine unless and until it serves the purpose but i agree the language must be improved.

You are right that the originality of cartoons are lost long back but I partly agree with Mav too. But for the kids there is much more too do in our country than watching the cartoon, I think cartoon does not provide GK to kids as other channels like National Geography, Discovery, History, and list nay go on for gaining knowledge.

I agree that earlier cartoons like captain planet, swats cats are not there. I feel, dubbing in Hindi is fine, because nowadays, TV has come in villages also..For Eg: in Tata Sky, there is an option, where you can watch cartoon serials in either English or Hindi, that option I like it. Children in cities will watch in english and those in villages who don't understand english will watch in hindi. Dubbing is fine, untill it serves its purpose. But the quality of language needs to improve..

I really miss watching 'The jetsons', "Adventures of Scooby Doo', 'The Addams Family'..shows that taught me more english than my school teacher....

@ mav : they might b more in demand but they lose a touch of humor.. translate 'Jetson!! you're fired!' in hindi..sounds ridiculous..

Please go to Causes.org, create the Cause, " Telecast Cartoons in English" and send out invites to people whom you know. Later the petition can be forwarded to CN.

That apart, do you know that in the non-urban areas, the preferred language is the local language and their numbers are far more than the "English" speaking ones.
