The Common Admission Test ’2013 (CAT ’2013) started on Wednesday, October 16, 2013. The first session started at 10 am and the second session at 3.15 pm. CAT ’2013 will be conducted over a 20 day period till Monday, November 11, 2013, in 40 cities in India.

As per sources, CAT ’2013 was easier in comparison with CAT ’2012. More weightage has been assigned to the reasoning section in CAT ’2013. CAT ’2013 has 2 sections-Quantitative Ability (QA) and Data Interpretation (DI) as well as Verbal Ability (VA) and Logical Reasoning (LR). As per sources, regarding difficulty level, both the sections were moderate.

The Common Admission Test, popularly known as CAT, is an all-India test conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) as an entrance examination for the management programs offered by its business schools as well as other top Master of Business Administration (MBA) schools. Other than the 13 IIMs, more than 100 business schools (B-schools) in India use CAT scores to grant admission to students into their management courses

As per some candidates, there were no surprise elements on the first day of the test in terms of examination pattern, which was similar to the pattern of CAT ’2012. Moreover, there were no technical issues during the test. Many students claimed that this year the question paper was more time-consuming than previous tests.

As per some students, Section1 was as per expected pattern relating to topics covered with focus on algebra and geometry sets along with calculation intensive caselets. Few students claimed that QA was tougher than expected. LR and English were easier, claimed few students. Although few students found the paper to be moderately difficult, they also felt it was easier in comparison with last year’s paper.

As per sources, VA and LR consisted of lengthy passages of Reading Comprehension (RC). The non-RC verbal questions had a blend of grammar as well as verbal reasoning question sets.

As per officials of the test administrator firm Prometric that conducts CAT, 4,066 candidates across India wrote CAT ’2013 on the first day. The next test is expected to be held on Friday, October 18, 2013.

Prometric officials claimed that the first day of CAT ’2013 was conducted in a smooth fashion. Candidates will be provided the most favorable testing experience during the entire testing period, the officials added.

115 more seats have been added in 2013 across 13 IIMs, accounting for a total of 3,335 seats. IIM CAT Results are likely to be announced on Tuesday, January 14, 2014. IIM-Indore will be the convener of CAT ’2013.

The total number of registrations for CAT ’2013 has dipped by almost 9% to a 5-year low of 1.94 lakh, down from around 2.14 lakh applications in 2012. This year, the state of Maharashtra has received the largest chunk of CAT registrations with Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh following.

Gujarat stands at 10th spot in terms of number of registrations. As per sources, CAT applications in Gujarat have dipped from approximately 6,900 in 2011 and 7,500 in 2012 to 6,898 this year. Almost 180 candidates from the state of Gujarat wrote the online CAT test in 3 test centers. As per officials, 80 candidates wrote the test in LJ Institute of Management Studies and 60 in Shanti Business School (both in Ahmadabad) and 40 candidates wrote it in Bhagwan Mahavir Education Foundation in Surat.
