CBSE to introduce vocational courses on fitness and gym

The CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) has decided to launch vocational courses on gym and fitness operations for Class XI and XII students from the academic session of 2012-13.

Initially, the course will be launched in 50 schools this academic year. Later it will be extended to other schools in the next academic session based on the feedback.

The board is also in talks with organizations that have expertise in this area and with universities for commencing either a full or partial joint certification of the course.

The new subject will comprise of a theory part with 5 units of 60 marks. In Std XI textbooks chapters will be fitness and wellness phenomenon, health, physiology of exercises and training, health and fitness profiling, structure of health related fitness, diet and nutrition and wellness program.

The practical part carrying 40 marks will comprise of 4 chapters, to be covered in 3 terms. The board has also prepared a list of equipments that would be required for practicals in schools.

For class XII, the theory component will include health planning, weight management, fitness aerobics, gym operations, dimensions of modified lifestyle and fitness aerobics.

For introducing the course, the CBSE schools should have a full time postgraduate PET (Physical Education Teacher) faculty appointed.

The PET will be required to undergo 2 orientation programs each of 15 days duration. The first orientation program will be for class XI and second one for class XII. Moreover, the students who take this subject during summer breaks will have to appear for an internship program of 1 month at a CBSE recognized gym.

The CBSE board will soon introduce course textbooks for class XI that is designed to facilitate students to gain skills in health management, create career opportunities and develop employability skills.
