The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is all set to introduce law as a pilot project in XI and XII standards from the academic year, 2013-14, in 200 schools across India and abroad. As a result, aspiring lawyers can now commence studying law from school level only.

Legal studies will be an elective subject in school, which students can choose along with three other elective subjects and a language. Law is expected to be popular mostly among those humanities and commerce streams students who aspire to get admission in the five-year integrated law program.

As per the CBSE chairman, the board has decided to commence legal studies in XI standard from 2013-14 onwards, which will be a pilot project in the first year, on the basis of first-come first-serve. Observing the response in the 200 schools, the board will offer it to their other affiliated schools.

The board has sent its letter dated April 5, 2013, to its affiliated schools asking them their interest in offering legal studies as a subject to their students. All the schools have to convey their interest level to the board by April 20, 2013.

As per the CBSE officials, studying law makes students familiar with understanding of public affairs and enhances their awareness towards their entitlements and duties as a citizen. Talented students may opt for law once they get familiar with the subject and understand the same.

The subject will contain theory and nature of political institutions, historical evolution of Indian legal system, civil and criminal courts and processes, nature and sources of law, family justice system, arbitration, alternate dispute resolution and human rights in India, tribunal adjudication, international context, and legal profession in India.

Students will get an idea about law as a subject, before they opt for legal studies in their higher education.

From June 2013, the schools will commence teaching law in class XI, which will continue in class XII in 2014-15 as well.
