Karnataka CET counseling goes online

Published On: 28 Mar 2012 | Last Updated On: 18 Apr 2012

The KEA (Karnataka Examination Authority) has introduced e-counseling for the students qualifying CET (Common Entrance Test) this year. The online counseling process will enable students to choose their seats from their homes and will reduce the students and their parents’ pain of visiting counseling centers.

The e-counseling process will also track blocking of seats as the KEA website will display the status of seat as selected as soon as a student opts for it. The software will search for the seats depending on the merit and preferences made by the candidate and allot the best one available. The software will also enable students to know the details of various available seats in one shot. Earlier the details of available seats were flashed on screens at KEA centers. Earlier students were required to visit the counseling centers atleast 8 to 10 times till the entire process got over. But now students will be allotted their seats in 2 simple steps i.e. document verification and fee payment. All candidates securing ranks in CET exam are eligible to participate.

The initial step is documents verification which will be available at 12 helpline centers; Belgaum, Bangalore, Chitradurga, Bellary, Dharwad, Mangalore, Mysore, Gulbarga, Karwar, Bijapur, Shimoga and Raichur. The number of helpline centers has also been doubled.

After verifying the documents, KEA will return the certificates and keep attested Xerox copied as records. Once students receive a verification slip and an acknowledgement card, they will be briefed about the process of seat selection. They will be provided secure log in ID and Passwords to enter their choices. They can give options in all areas as per their eligibility in a single form.

Candidates need to mention the college codes in the application form. For engineering branches also, course codes should be given. There are infinite options to choose seats. For instance, if there are 33 medical colleges, one can choose 33 options; these will keep changing till last day. Allotment will take place in the given order - 1) Medical, 2) ISMH, 3) engineering and 4) architecture.

This year also there will be 3 rounds of counseling. After finishing the first round, a student will have 3 options; firstly he can join college; secondly he can go for better options and lastly, surrender his seat and apply for next round. This will continue for 2nd and 3rd rounds of counseling. Seats which are surrendered or not allotted will be pooled to the next rounds.

The new e-counseling system will ensure liberty to the students. Hands on training and e-tutorials, mock allotment, FAQs and CDs will be made available on the website. Students are suggested to zero in the preferences, prepare a list of choices, know about the colleges desired to opt and then choose the options.
