Assam down town University is part of The down town Charity Trust established in 1997 by the down town hospital ltd. The urge to do something for the underprivileged and deprived section of the society led to the formation of down town Charity Trust. Apart from doctors, the members of the Trust include Engineers, Educationists and other professionals from various walks of life. The down town Charity Trust is promoted by down town hospital ltd., the first corporate multi specialty hospital in North Eastern India. It has a distinguished name in the healthcare industry, serving the people of Assam and the North Eastern Region with its expertise for the last 23 years.
The main aim of the university is to reach premium healthcare facilities to the economically weaker sections of the society and to create infrastructure to develop the human resource of the region.
The trust has been involved in varied social activities like organising free health camps, undertaking special health programs like the Smile Train Project, the Dhwani Project as well as a free clothes bank “Sankar Madhab Vastra Bank” for the low income group population.The trust has established the Shankar Madhab Rural Charity Hospital at Panikhaiti Assam with the intention to provide quality healthcare at the most reasonable rates to the common people.

The institute site is at Panikhaiti, which is situated about 12kms from the State Capital in Dispur. The site is spread on a sprawling campus of over 45 acres overlooking the mighty Brahmaputra.The trust has set up a 300 bedded Sankar Madhab Hospital in the location. Besides the teaching hospital, the trust has already built all required academic and support services at the campus, covering an area of over 300,0000 sq.ft.

Scholoarship at Assam down town University –
The scholarship will be provided to the students, on every subsequent semester, subject to them being able to maintain a certain academic performance, as laid out by the university:
Result Scholarship: These Scholarships are provided to the toppers of the respective university's annual or semester examinations. The scholarship can be upto 50% of the semester fees and will be valid for the semester subsequent to the one in which the result was scored.
Merit Scholarship: These Scholarships will be provided to meritorius students, from relatively economically backward families. The scholarship can be upto 100% and will be decided case to case basis, by a special committe appointed by the university. The student has to provide documentation of his academic performance as well as family income and background.
