Biju Patnaik Film & Television Institute of Orissa (BPFTIO), Cuttack was established in 1998. Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India in 13th January, 1992 wrote to Government of Orissa to explore the possibility of introducing appropriate courses to meet the acute shortage of technical manpower required for electronics media. Accordingly the Diploma course in Cinematography was introduced in the year 1992 in Bhubanananda Orissa School of Engineering, Cuttack under World Bank assisted Project on Technician Education. Thereafter Diploma course in Sound & TV Engineering & Film & Video Editing were introduced in the year 1996. With the approval of MHRD, Government of India and Government of Orissa An Autonomous Institute Film & Television Institute was created, carving the above 3 diploma courses from BOSE, Cuttack. Industries Department renamed Film & Television Institute of Orissa as Biju Pattanaik Film & Television Institute of Orissa, Cuttack.
BPFTIO has some of the most advanced and sophisticated equipments in the Eastern Region and all the three disciplines are headed by experienced faculties who have graduated from FTII, Pune. Ten batches of students in Cinematography, seven batches both in Sound & TV. Engineering and Film & Video Editing have successfully completed their course till date. Almost all the diploma holders of the institute have found gainful employment in Government and Private sector, Media channels, Television & Film industry.
