Institute of Education, Massey University was established in 2013 within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. It was formerly known as the College of Education, which was formed in 1996 when the then Massey University Faculty of Education merged with the Palmerston North College of Education. The original Department of Education was created with the establishment of Massey University as an independent university in January 1964.
The teaching, research and outreach activities of the institute focus on explaining the nature of lifelong and life wide education, Improving the processes of formal, professional and everyday educational settings, understanding the contribution of learning and teaching to personal, family, organizational and community development; and reducing educational inequalities.
The institute is committed to creating inclusive bicultural and multicultural learning communities. The research and research training programs encourage mixed methods research and bring together scholarly, professional and community interests. The institute’s outreach includes international short courses, degree and higher degree qualifications, and national and regional professional learning and development contracts.
