Deccan College, Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Pune was established in 1821 as Hindoo College. In 1851 it was renamed as the Poona College and later as the Deccan College in 1864. The College was closed down by the British Government in 1934, but because of the efforts of the past students and the public spirited citizens, it was reopened on 17th August 1939 as Deccan College, Post-Graduate and Research Institute, by the Transfer Deed passed by the Hon'ble Bombay High Court.
It is the third oldest Educational Institute in India. The university is declared as Deemed University under section of UGC, it is accredited by NAAC with 'A' Grade. The mission is to provide an exceptionally conducive learning environment that prepares students for meaningful personal lives, professional achievements and responsible global citizenship.

The University occupies an area of about 115 acres near Yerawada. The Main building of the University was constructed in 1864 in the Gothic style. From time to time a number of buildings came up around the main building which is being used for various purposes.
