Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Kolhapur was established in 1989. The Medical College is recognized by Medical Council of India for undergraduate and post graduate programmes. The name of the college is already included in WHO directory. During its formative years the college was affiliated to the Shivaji University, Kolhapur and from June 1998 the college came to be affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. Now the College has become a Constituent College of the D.Y. Patil University, Kolhapur. The Centre at regular intervals discusses current research problems in health science teaching, methodology and emerging areas of research in clinical practices. The quality of teaching is evident from the excellent University Results the College has always produced.

Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Kolhapur is a sprawling campus admeasuring 5.5 acres of land. The total bunt up area of the budding is 11172.0 sq. ft. The cost of the building is Rs.180 million. The laboratories are equipped with sophisticated equipments. The cost of equipments and furniture is Rs. 52.3 million. Recently the reading room has been renovated to provide better academic atmosphere.
