Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) was established in 1986, as the first University of Health Sciences in the State after a number of committees had given their recommendations for doing so. The Andhra Pradesh University of Health Sciences was established by the Act 6 of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature. It was inaugurated in 9th April, 1986 by the then Chief Minister, late Sri N. T. Rama Rao. However, the University officially started its operations at Vijayawada from 1st November, 1986.
The State government of Andhra Pradesh rechristened the University in 1998 and it was named after its founder Sri N. T. Rama Rao. This medical institute of India started operating as the Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Andhra Pradesh from 2nd February, 1998. The principal objectives of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS), Vijayawada was to improve the standards of medical education, including research. This is done by conducting a common entrance examination to the courses in all the institutions affiliated thereto.
The university was also established to achieve its objectives by implementing uniform curriculum in all courses. In the initial period, the office of the NTRUHS shared its campus with Siddhartha Medical College building and the university functioned in that limited space till March, 2002. However, the NTRUHS was shifted into its present building in April, 2002. Not declared fit to receive Central/UGC assistance under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act-1956.
