Overview
Gauhati University (GU), Guwahati was established in 1948 under the Guwahati University Act 1947 of the government of Assam. The university is recognized by UGC, it has been awarded a "B" Grade on a four scale, the point of the Gauhati University being 2.91 by the NAAC council of UGC. It is accredited by International Accreditation Organization. The university is in its 58th year of existence, and it is the oldest, the largest, and the most premiere seat of higher education in the entire North Eastern region of India.
 
The vision of the university is to revitalize its educational leadership and transform an institution of higher development of the intellect, the will, and the moral; collaboration and sharing of knowledge with institutions of excellence.The objective of the university is to bring about social, economic, cultural, moral and spiritual upliftment of the people of Assam, to conduct pioneering research works in the frontier areas of knowledge, to strengthen the extension education services to the society.

The University is located ar jalukbari with in the Guwahati city area, few kilometers away from Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi international airport, Barjyar,Guwahati, nearest railway stations are kamakhya and guwahati which is also well connected by road transport.

It has 341 affiliated colleges UG and PG courses in the faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Law and Engineering. The university is a member of the Association of Indian universities and the Association of Common wealth universities.
