Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar was established in 1969 to mark the 500th birth anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev. It is both a residential and an affiliating university. The university today boasts of 37 academic departments, two regional centre’s, two colleges and a score of support service departments besides several administrative offices. In recent years, the University has diversified in a big way its programs into applied sciences making it one of the distinguished centre’s of industry related job-oriented courses.
The university imparts education and promoting research in the humanities, learned professions, sciences, especially of applied nature and technology. Guru Nanak Dev University has won the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad trophy 17 times and has been accredited with a five star status by National Assessment and Accreditation Council of UGC. The university has contributed tremendously in accessing higher education to women in this otherwise educationally backward area.

Guru Nanak Dev University is located in two distinct regional campuses. They are
Jalandhar campus: Guru Nanak Dev University regional campus, though started in 1979, got its own sprawling beautiful campus at Ladhewali Road, Jalandhar in 2003.
Gurdaspur campus: Guru Nank Dev University regional campus, Gurdaspur was established in 1999. University Campus, Gurdaspur is located on the Hardochanni Road. It is situated on the periphery of Gurdaspur town in the lap of pristine nature.

Admission to courses at all levels in Guru Nanak Dev University is made strictly on the basis of national, state and university level entrance tests.
MET/PAM CAT is an entrance exam conducted for admission to MBA and MCA courses respectively in the departments, institutes and colleges affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar, Punjabi University, Patiala and PTU Jalandhar.
Progressive Educational Society Entrance Test is a project sponsored by government of Punjab for students residing at rural areas who are provided with free specialized education for 10+1 and 10+2 classes (total 2 years).
Guru Nanak Dev University conducts CET LAW/LLB/LLM Entrance Exam called GNDU CET for admissions to various law courses.
