The Indian Institute of Materials Management - IIMM emerged as an All India Body in 1975 with the merger of three professional associations - The National Association of Materials Management which until 1966 was known as National Association of Purchasing Executives. The Materials Management Association of India earlier known as Purchasing Officer's Association and the Materials Management Association of Hyderabad, and was named as the Indian Association of Materials Management (IAMM) which was later changed to Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM). This merger was in itself a milestone, thus giving birth to an Institute in its present form, India's only professionally recognized body for Materials Management.
The Institute through its membership with 44 regional branches and 19 Chapters all over the country represent a wide spectrum of professionals engaged in the various facets of Materials and Supply Chain Management who are responsible for the planning of acquisition, control and distribution of materials and services. The need, to introduce and implement modern tools and techniques of Materials Management, is widely recognized in Public, Private and Government sectors.
To source a wider recognition of and promote the importance of efficient Materials Management in commercial and industrial undertakings.
To safeguard and elevate the professional status of Individuals engaged in the Materials Management faculty.
To constantly impart advanced professional knowledge and thus improve the skill of the person engaged in the Materials Management function.

The Institute is a charter member of the International Federation of Purchasing & Supply Management (IFPSM) which has its headquarters in USA. The IFPSM was founded in 1974 with the merger of International Committee of Purchasing and European Federation of Purchasing. It represents a world wide unity of purchasing, materials management and logistics professionals. It has more than 1,50,000 members through its members associations in 38 countries spread over 6 continents. IFPSM enjoys, a consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Trade Development (UNCTAD) and the United Nations Economics and Social Council (ECOSOC).
IIMM has hosted the prestigious IFPSM World congress in Mumbai in November 1993.
National Council: The National Council, whose members are elected, consists of the President, Senior Vice President, Four Regional Vice Presidents, National Secretary / Treasurer and National Council Members representing individual Branches.
Branch Committee: Each branch is governed though elected Members consisting of Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Committee Members and National Council Members.
Today IIMM has branches all over India. It has over 10,000 individual and institutional members, drawn from public, private & government sectors. The Branches conduct various programs for the benefit of the members.
In order to propagate the profession of Materials Supply Chain Management, the Institute also arranges a National Convention every year, in one of the major cities of India. The Institute regularly organizes Executive Development Programs to upgrade the knowledge of practicing managers. For the Conventions and EDP's the members are given liberal concessions in Registration fees.
The Institute organizes a prestigious All India Young Materials Managers competition encouraging the young materials professionals. The National Award, the highest honor of the Institute is conferred with the objective of giving recognition to one of its members for outstanding contribution to the development of the profession and the Institute.
The Institute celebrates April 23rd as Materials Management day each year as it was rechristened as IIMM on this day.
IIMM has set up a Research Centre in collaboration with IISWBM at Calcutta in all areas related to Materials Management.
The Institute distribute to the members. Materials Management Reviews a bi monthly publication covering various aspects of Materials Management, its modern trends and research activities. There are various proposals to publish research work on Materials Management based on Indian conditions.
