Indian Maritime University (IMU), Kochi was established with the objective of developing it later on into a full-fledged Campus. The Indian Maritime University, being the first of its kind in the country will cater to the educational requirement of the maritime fraternity. The institute is established to facilitate and promote Maritime Studies and Research and to achieve excellence in the areas of Naval architecture, Maritime Science and Technology & Marine Environment.
The IMA is approved by the Directorate General of shipping (DGS) Ministry of shipping, Government of India, is awarded ISO 9001:2008 Quality Certification by Indian Register Quality Systems, is graded as " outstanding " institution (GRADE-1) by SMERA (which is a DGS approved Rating Agency) for the infrastructural facilities and other features.

The Kochi campus is a prime location at willingdon Island. 2.6 acres lies on the highway on the willingdon Island and is surrounded by the Kochi Port Trust, the Southern Naval Command and the Kochi Shipyard.
