Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bangalore was established in 1972 with the assistance of Government of Denmark for large scale production of FMD virus vaccine and conducts basic and applied research on FMD. This is the first FMD vaccine plant in the country set up under the DANIDA program. The monitoring and surveillance wing of this campus keeps a constant vigil over the economically important diseases of the southern region.
The Institute has been awarded International Gold Star Award by (BID) Business Initiative Directions, Madrid, (Spain) for the quality of work for the 1988-89. The objective of the institute is production of foot and mouth disease vaccine (in large scale) and all associated research and development of FMD vaccines.
