Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Kolkata was established in 1970 as a joint venture between IVRI (ICAR) and All India Institute of Hygiene & Public Health (GOI) to train specialists in veterinary public health, leading to the degree of MVPH of University of Calcutta. In 1987, the regional station was shifted to erstwhile Bengal Veterinary College campus and thereafter, the directors of animal husbandry and veterinary service of eastern and north-eastern states recommended the strengthening of this IVRI regional station to address the regional problems.
The specialized training courses in the frontline areas of science are organized for the field veterinary officers in collaboration with Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department of State Govt. It acts as a window for dissemination of technology at the grass-root level for the improvement of socio-economic status of resource poor farmers of the region. The objective is to carry out basic and applied research on animal diseases with special emphasis on zoonoses in Eastern and North-Eastern Region.
