Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER), Kolkata was established in 1957 by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India. Since then the institute is best known as a Medical Learning Center of Excellence and a Specialty Hospital. In 2004, IPGMER was converted into a medical training institute as well. Earlier Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research was affiliated to University of Calcutta from 1957-2003. IPGMER is affiliated to West Bengal University of Health Sciences.
Today, the institution is best known for study of undergraduate and post graduate level medical course, specialist medical degrees and diplomas, para medical courses and is known as the Bethlehem of advanced medical research. IPGMER is on its way to have autonomy in medical education and with that, the institute will have more action areas in medical research and advancement.

The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research is located on 34 acre of lush greenery on 244, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Road, near Race Course ground of Kolkata. On its north, across the AJC Bose Road is the longest fly over of Kolkata and is the stunning and admiring Victoria Memorial, erected by Lord Curzon in the honour of Queen Victoria of England.
