Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), Thrissur was established in 1971 to provide human resources, skills and technology required for sustainable development of agriculture, including crop production, co-operation, forestry, agricultural engineering, home science and other allied disciplines by integrating education, research and extension. KAU mission is to Excellence in Agricultural Education, Research and Extension for Sustainable Agricultural Development and Livelihood security of farming community.
Kerala Agricultural University is well poised to meet the challenges ahead that transforms agriculture sector into the engine of growth of Kerala's economy by providing the human resources, and skills and technology for the sustainable development of state's agriculture, all economic activities put to the production of biomass based land and water including crop production (agriculture) and forestry.
The Agricultural College and Research Institute at Vellayani, and the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, were brought under the Kerala Agricultural University. In addition, twenty one agricultural and animal husbandry research stations were also transferred to the KAU for taking up research and extension programs on various crops, animals, birds, etc.

The University under the KAU Act is bestowed with responsibility and vested with jurisdiction extending to the entire geographic territory of the State in fulfilling its designated mandate. Located almost in the middle of the state at Vellanikkara in the Thrissur District on the National Highway (NH47) at about 13 km from the Thrissur Railway Station and 50 km from the International Airport, Kochi, the headquarters of KAU is easily accessible by road, rail and air.

The KAU has a career placement cells in all colleges. These cells provide opportunities for potential employers to recruit KAU graduates. KAU post graduates and doctorate degree holders from KAU man key research positions in the state and national-level organizations (ICAR, ICFRE), besides foreign universities/international organizations. Several of the KAU alumni have gained entry into the civil service, agricultural research service/state departments of agriculture, animal husbandry, forests and wildlife, cooperation, fisheries and various public sector corporations and cooperative sector organizations.
