Kolhan University, Kolhan was established in 2009. The total number of students enrolled in Kolhan University for Bachelors, Masters and Vocational/Professional Courses comes to 55,500. In graduation level 43,000 students have been enrolled in Part-I and Part-II. The number of Part III students are about 12,500, at present appearing from Ranchi University. Apart from that, the number of students enrolled in PG, Medical, Dental, Engineering, MBA, B.Ed. and Vocational/Add-on Courses are about 8,142 . Therefore the total number of students enrolled is 63,642.
Apart from conventional courses in UG and PG level including Medical/ Dental/ Engineering/ Law/ Management/ Education Vocational Courses are running under the University.Kolhan University was set up with an initial cost estimate of Rs 35.13 cr.It is situated close to Jharkhand & Orissa border. It is also planning on opening a second campus in Steel city Tata Nagar and talks are underway.
The establishment of separate university in Kolhan area in the state is very much justified as the Kolhan area, comprising of West Singhbhum, East Singhbhum and Saraikela Kharsawan districts, are deprived of facilities of higher education and the University would be able to meet the demands of the area. The university has well equipped, airy and spacious class rooms with all modern facilities. The university has well maintained library with wide range of books collection and journals. Not declared fit to receive Central/UGC assistance under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act-1956.
