Madras School of Social Work (MSSW), Chennai was established in 1952 under the joint auspices of the Madras State Branch of the Indian Conference of Social Work (renamed as the Indian Council of Social Welfare) and the Guild of Service (Central). The college is now run under the aegis of the Society for Social Education and Research formed in 1960.
Madras School of Social Work emerges as the centre for excellence in Education and Research in Social Work, Social Sciences and Management to meet the demands of the Global Society and build human resources for inclusive development. It is an autonomous institution, affiliated to University of Madras.

Placement Cell at Madras School of Social Work-
The college initiated its Placement Cell in 2009. The Placement Cell has been coordinating all the placement activities of the students, with support from the Faculty and the Student coordinators. The Placement Cell holds regular meetings of the student leaders, facilitated by the Placement Coordinator. The Placement Cell constantly collaborates with the Alumni Association (MSSWA) for its various activities.
