Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV), Rahuri was established in 1968 as Maharashtra Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri and one of noted agricultural universities in the state of Maharashtra. The University is a reorganized form of Maharashtra Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri. This has been renamed after a great social reformer Mahatma Jyotiba Phule. Upon the recommendations of the ICAR Peer Review Committee and Education Division, and meeting the accreditation criteria, the Accreditation Board has granted accreditation to MPKV, Rahuri and its constituent colleges. University has signed MOUs with various National and International Universities and organizations for mutual collaboration.
The aim of the University is to create and develop scientific and technical manpower for obtaining the highest production and productivity in each farm system to bring them at export level. The University has two faculties namely Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering. The under-graduate and post-graduate programmes are offered in both faculties. The University also deals with lower agricultural education through Agricultural Schools, Mali Training Centre and Training's for Livestock Supervisors. The University has a very good network of research stations spread over different agro-climatic zones. In all 23 research stations, 4 State level specialists and 16 research testing/verification centers are located in different agro-climatic zones in addition to 4 Zonal research stations.

The Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth campus is situated 160 km from Pune on Pune-Delhi highway in Ahmednagar district. Forty kilometer in the South is Ahmednagar town and 50 km in the North is Shirdi.
