N.P.Ogarev Mordovia State University now boasting a status of a National research university is a Federal state budgetary academic institution of higher education offering the whole spectrum of academic programmes for undergraduate, graduate and post graduate students; among its core activity is fundamental and applied research, further training and qualification improvement courses for teaching staff and scholars. It is the major higher education institution in the Republic. By the Federal government edict dated of 20th May 2010 Ogarev Mordovia State University was conferred a category "National research university".


Founded in 1931 as the Agronomy Pedagogical Institute it gradually expanded and granted the University status in 1957. Its appearance was a milestone in the evolution of quality education in the Republic of Mordovia. The great majority (about 75%) of eligible Mordovian students attend Ogarev Mordovia State University. This determines its pivotal role as a centre of education, research, culture and services for Mordovia and its people.


Ogarev Mordovia State University is situated in Saransk (popul. 298,000), capital of the Republic of Mordovia, 620 kilometers south east of Moscow. With its 28 academic buildings, 12 residence halls (9 for undergraduate students and 3 for graduate students and academic staff) it is active in other Mordovian towns where it has 2 filiations.


Teaching staff is of some 1.700 (13,5% of doctors, full professors and 66% of seniour lecturers).


Prospective students can choose from a variety of 133 available tracks of undergraduate and graduate study and concentration areas within full-time, part-time and evening programmes.


The University has a student population composed of over 13.000 full timers, 8.000 part timers and 240 evening students. There are also over 300 international students.


Full time curriculum covers either 4 or 5-year periods of study depending on degree programme; evening and part-time education requires 6 years.


Bachelor degrees are conferred upon completion of a 4-year period of study. Medical Institute offers 6 and 7-year programmes of study respectively.


The learning and teaching methods focus on direct contact with students through lectures, workshops and practical classes. Throughout their course students are expected to complete theoretical and practical tasks and assignments and to undertake tests and final examinations at the end of each semester.

Educational process in the university is being carried out according to European standards in conjunction with innovative activity in the sphere of knowledge-intensive technologies. Our university qualifies experts of new generation, who determines the perspectives of the development of main branches of economy and social infrastructure.


Thanks to developed scientific and research work of the university our students can try hand at science: scientific and research activities are being carried out on 22 branches of science and engineering. A variety of huge projects is being carried out within the partnership with foreign educational and scientific centers. Students have the opportunity to participate in innovative projects, getting through the full innovative cycle a from ideas to final products.


N.P.Ogarev Mordovia State University is located in the capital city of Mordovia Republic - Saransk. Saransk lies 620 km south-east of Moscow and can be reached by an overnight train. Mordovia is connected to other regions of Russia by the network of highways and railroads. There is an airport in Saransk but the most convenient way to get to Saransk is by train.


Our city has quite affordable cost of living. Besides, our students dont have to look for accommodation: our university offers 14 hostels, where students make themselves at home. Housing fee is moderate and amounts 500-700 USD per academic year.


During the process of studying students need quick and easy access to information. Especially for these purposes the university has information recourses useful for studying and scientific and research work: scientific library with access to 3 electronic library systems and to 28 full text library databases, informational resource center, university website (section Education). University buildings and hostels are connected with high-speed information highway of the university, equipped with wide range high-speed access to the Internet.


Besides the organization of educational process university pays a lot of attention to extra-curricular activities. The system of students self-administration integrates more than 40 noncommercial associations, where students can try themselves in any sphere, which is interesting for them.


Ogarev Mordovia State University pays a lot of attention to a healthy lifestyle and sports. Health improving fitness, dance therapy, yoga and step-aerobics clubs are functioning in the hostels of campus. Volleyball, basketball leagues and the national football students’ league are functioning at the base of university. The programme of physical education for disabled students is being carried out successfully.


Infrastructure and Facilities


N. P. Ogarev Mordovia State University today boasts a restyled campus with 52 academic buildings, laboratories and 14 hostels occupying 282 920 sq. meters.


The Development Programme of University as a National Research Institution has allowed to launch an unparalleled programme of a large-scale constructuring of new academic-related amenities.


During the recent years four academic buildings have been erected, with state-of-the-art fitness centre and swimming pool thrown in the mix. Palace of Culture and Arts opened its doors to prospective students. They have spacious ballet rooms for choreographic classes, vocal studios and cozy workrooms for future painters and designers. The main campus 17-floor building is being prepared for opening.


Two more de luxe halls of residence were opened in 2010 to accommodate more than 1000 students. They offer comfortable rooms; each has a cable TV, fridge and a shower cabin. Among the facilities are computer classes with access to the Internet, laundry rooms, performance halls and fitness rooms. Here you will find all the necessary conditions to pursue studies and have some rest after it.


Pursuant to the implementation of the University Development Programme innovative research infrastructure have undergone significant changes. New buildings and laboratories have been constructed to serve as basic research and development centres in the priority fields of science. The university has purchased modern equipment to tool up 16 Research and Education Centres, 4 Centres of Shared Use including 42 remodelled laboratories.
