National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur which was born as Regional College of Engineering, Jamshedpur, was established by the Government of India and the Government of Bihar as a joint venture in 1960 with the aim to generate technical graduates of highest standards who could provide technological leadership to the region.
The foundation stone of this institute was laid on 15th August, 1960 at Adityapur.RIT was upgraded to National Institute of Technology on 27th December, 2002, with the status of a deemed university. It is now totally under the control of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, New Delhi since 1st April, 2003.
The Institute, with 115 faculty, 1350 students, 300 administrative and supporting staff, is a self-contained campus. It is located on the outskirts of Jamshedpur on 320 acres of sprawling, rolling hilly, wooded land. It combines natural beauty of countryside with urban glamor of an industrial area.It has been growing from strength to strength ever since it was established in 1960.
The Institute has several departments in various disciplines of engineering and the pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organized on a unique pattern of functioning.The D-day for RIT, Jamshedpur was 27th December, 2002 when it was formally upgraded to National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur with the Deemed University status.

Training & Placement Cell :-
It is hereby notified for the information of students of final year that the Institute has taken due initiatives to ensure that the placement prospects of students of final year are not adversely affected by the recent unfortunate incident due to which the normal functioning of the Institute has been hampered.
In this connection the Training & Placement Cell of the Institute has already informed the companies (prospective employers) which are likely to visit N.I.T. Jamshedpur for placement with a request to defer their placement visit till classes of final year are resumed.
The Training and Placement Cell has taken the following steps :-
- M/S ARICENT have been requested to defer their placement visit by 3/4 weeks. They have agreed to this request.
- M/S CAREERNET have been requested to defer their PEP TEST by a month. They have agreed to this request.
- M/S TATA STEEL have been requested to defer their placement visit by 3/4 weeks. They have agreed to this request.
