North Bengal Medical College (NBMC), Darjeeling was established in 1968 as the first medical college of North Bengal. Originally envisioned by Dr. Bidhanchandra Roy, the planning was executed by Ajit Panja, the then state health minister. Prof. Ajit Kr. Duttagupta was the first official principal of the college which was then known as North Bengal University Medical College. NBUMC was rechristened in August 1978 to North Bengal Medical College & Hospital and the administrative control went from North Bengal University to Govt. of West Bengal.
North Bengal Medical College is situated far from the madding crowd set against the backdrop of mountains in the serene locale by the side of the river Balasone, about 7 km from Siliguri town proper. Here NBMC get a breathtaking view of the mountains and on a clear day, the Kanchenjungha can be seen. The college and hospital buildings, spread over the sprawling campus of 161 acres, are connected by very long corridors which total a length of 2.6 km.
