Shivaji University (SU), Kolhapur was established in 1962, is named after the great Maratha warrior and founder of the Maratha Empire Chhatrapati Shivaji. Shivaji University has been re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) Bangalore, with B grade. The University's efforts towards excellence are being recognized by the substantial grants received from funding agencies like UGC, DST, DBT etc. The University started functioning with 34 affiliated colleges and about 14000 students with 5 post-graduate departments on the campus. Today the number of affiliated colleges has gone up to 225 and students strength up to 2, 00,000 with 34 postgraduate departments on campus.

They are dedicated to promote and foster a culture of high quality teaching and learning and to serve societal needs by encouraging, generating and promotion excellence in research and extension activities. Scholarship at Shivaji University -
Shivaji University has achieved rare distinction of being the first ever University to launch the scholarship scheme for students of PG departments and under graduate students of affiliated colleges. Every year about 500 Scholarships are given from own corpus of the University. The Shivaji University Merit Scholarship Scheme (SUMS) offers one scholarship each of Rs. 5,000/- for every P.G. department for both the years. University also offers one departmental research fellowship for each PG department for the scholars pursuing Ph. D. degree.
