Sikkim University (SU), Sikkim was established in 2006. The first Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University is Professor Mahendra P. Lama. It was established and fully funded by the Government of India under an Act of Parliament. It is a central university. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, government of India and University Grants Commission are deeply committed to make this University truly an International Institution.
The University aims to emerge as the higher education hub in the eastern Himalayas in the next few years, focusing on both access to and quality of higher education at an affordable cost for the generally poor but deserving students of the region in general and Sikkim in particular.
Campus of Sikkim University -
Sikkim University is currently located at Gangtok, the capital town of Sikkim. The University is at present operating from several hired buildings spread over 17 kms along the National Highway - 10. The main administrative office of the University is located at Samdur, 6th Mile, Tadong. The permanent campus site of the University is located at Yangang in South Sikkim. The nearest airport is at Bagdogra and the nearest railway station is at New Jalpaiguri.
