Tezpur University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1994. The objects of this Central University as envisaged in the statutes are that it shall strive to offer employment oriented and interdisciplinary courses to meet the regional to national aspirations and the development of the state of Assam and also offer courses and promote research in areas which are of special and direct relevance to the region and in the emerging areas in Science and Technology.
The university is an Indian Central University located in Tezpur in the state of Assam, India. Currently, the Governor of Assam, Janaki Ballabh Patnaik is the Chancellor of Tezpur University, Prof. M.K. Chaudhuri is the Vice-Chancellor and Prof. Amarjyoti Choudhury is the Pro Vice-Chancellor.Visitors to the University may opt to stay in the modern and spacious guest house. Students may also choose to stay in any of the four men's or four Women's Hostel. In 2010, some girls were also accommodated in the Old Guest House of the University.
Tezpur University is the first university in India to offer the course Master of Technology in Computational Seismology and also one of the few universities in India to have its own Department of Energy. The Department of Electronics at Tezpur University is the first of its kind in India to introduce an interdisciplinary Master of Technology program in Bioelectronics. The first class graduated in June 2006. The university offers various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs in following academic divisions:

Tezpur University has an active Training and Placement Cell to facilitate Final Placements as Academic Placements, and other related activities. Over the years such efforts have paid rich dividends as excellent set of recruiters have selected there students both via on-campus recruitment process. The increasing number of visiting recruiters, the uptrend in the initial packages offered and the repeat visits for more recruitment indicates the upswing in the confidence there recruiters place on us.
The pleasant result of that is a healthy growth of the number of there students finally placed. The active follow-up efforts made by the Training and Placement Cell as well as the Department with the recruiters network makes it possible that each one of their graduates are suitably placed within a couple of months.
