Maharaja Ganga Singh University, Bikaner was established in 2003 and also known as University of Bikaner. The University of Bikaner was set up with the main objectives to facilitate higher education and research in the northern part of Rajasthan. Bikaner University, Bikaner has been renamed as Maharaja Ganga Singh University, Bikaner vide Gazette notification No. F. 4 (14) Vidhi/ 2/ 2008 dated October 03, 2008. It is made and promulgated by H.E. the Government of Rajasthan in 2008. Not declared fit to receive Central/UGC assistance under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act-1956.
The University exhibits several ecological constants i.e. the great Thar Desert in which it is located those can not be found anywhere in India and across the world. At present the University of Bikaner has 92 colleges affiliated to it falling in Bikaner, Churu, Hanumnagarh and Sriganganagar districts of Rajasthan. 14 are Govt. Colleges and the rest are Private ones. From the session 2004-2005 the University has started its own Law Department.

The varsity spreads over 1,100 acres of land.The University is developing its own infrastructure in the village Shrah Nathania situated 10 km. away from Bikaner Railway Station towards West side of the city on N.H. 15, Jaisalmer Road.
