University of Bonn was established in 1818 by the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm. It is for this reason that their University was subsequently named after the king - the official title is actually The Rhenish Friedrich Wilhelm University of Bonn. It was founded almost 200 years ago and is considered to be one of Germany's and indeed Europe's most important institutes of higher education.
