University of Louisville
University of Louisville (LU) was established in 1798 as Jefferson Seminary, a state supported research university located in Kentucky's largest metropolitan area. Later after the closure of the Jefferson Seminary, the Louisville Collegiate Institute (LCI) was chartered. In 1840 LCI was renamed Louisville College and in 1844 it inherited the portion of the estate of Jefferson Seminary designated for the use of higher education in Louisville. It was later in 1846 the Kentucky legislature created the University of Louisville.
It was a municipally supported public institution for many decades prior to joining the university system in 1970. University of Louisville mission is to be a premier, nationally recognized metropolitan research university with a commitment to the liberal arts and sciences and to the intellectual, cultural and economic development of their diverse communities and citizens through the pursuit of excellence in interrelated strategic areas.
