About the Institute

Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS) was established as an extension department of St. Xavier's College, Ranchi, in 1955 with the objective of training young men and women in Rural Development, Personnel Management and Industrial Relations. In 1973 the institute was registered as a separate educational society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. In 1978, it moved to its present site and over the years has developed its own distinct identity as a centre of excellence in management education, research, consultancy and development interventions.

Since its inception, XISS has identified itself both as service institution and centre for academic excellence. As a service institution, XISS has a vision of just, humane, and equitable society where the underprivileged (poor and oppressed) assume their rightful place. XISS also visualizes itself as a centre of excellence in the country, imparting value driven management and development education, and catering to its diverse clientele and stakeholders.

  • To be a top management school and develop committed, down to earth, sensitive professionals, who work with and for others
  • To work towards the empowerment of the deprived so that they shape their own destiny
  • To be a leading catalyst in capacity building, sustainable development, research and consultancy.

Why the Institute?

Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS) Ranchi has a legacy which is more than 500 years old. The Institute is managed and governed by Society of Jesus - more popularly known as "Jesuits". They came into existence in 1540 in Rome by papal decree and since then have been engaged in promoting quality education throughout the world. The best known colleges in India and abroad - St Xavier's Colleges in Mumbai and Kolkata, XLRI Jamshedpur, XIM Bhubaneswar etc - share the same legacy of quality education.

XISS Ranchi believes in the philosophical attitude "Professionals with a difference". This may sound strange to many but we believe, and have believed since inception, that any activity including business exists in society. As such, any business should give back to the society what it takes from the society. In doing so, it should also ensure that the members of the society are not left behind. We intend to make professionals with a different attitude - of caring, sharing and giving to the society while being responsible citizens of the corporate world.

So if you are looking for being A professional who cares - cares for others, cares for the society, and cares for the world - you are welcome to XISS. And in the process you get a rigorous education which equips you to deliver your best in the corporate sector.

Message from the Director

"XISS has carved a niche for itself in the cutting edge areas of management education, rural development, social research, consultancy, training and development interventions in the past 55 years of its existence. As a premier management school today, XISS caters to the human resource requirements of the industries, information technology sector and non-governmental organizations. Moreover, the institute has grown as an important resource centre for development sector in this region.

At XISS, the curricula of various academic programmes are revised and updated constantly so as to meet the emerging needs of the industries and development sector. No wonder, the institute has turned into a favorite hunting ground for both the corporate and development sectors to meet their manpower requirements. Our alumni have also lived up to the expectations of their employers. That is why they participate in the Campus Recruitment Programmes year after year quite religiously. They have placed utmost faith in the integrity and professional competence of XISS fraternity. This is a vivid testimony of our commitment to excellence and endeavor to create professionals with a difference.

Our faculty, staff and students do their best to be efficient professionals in sync with the ground realities of our society and respond to the issues of social justice while taking the side of those who are at the receiving end. Education at XISS means sensitizing the students with appropriate values, attitudes and critical thinking tools that set them apart as professionals with a difference in their career and life.

XISS is one of the oldest B-Schools that started preparing HR and IR professionals to address the problems pertaining to the people dimension of the industry.

Later, a Post Graduate Diploma course in Rural Development was launched at this premier institute to fulfill the growing demand of professionals required to take up the formidable task of working for the development needs of rural India. The rural development professionals graduating from XISS are respected for their sense of commitment and dedication to the cause of the downtrodden and the marginalized.

Research and consultancy services offered by the institute, both, to the industry and the development sector have brought kudos to the untiring efforts of the faculty and the project officers of the institute. Besides, we have made a significant contribution towards dissemination of knowledge through our publishing programme. In the last five years, our quarterly journal - Jharkhand Journal of Development and Management Studies - has emerged as an important platform for the academia, professionals and social activists. The journal has got due appreciation from the international community as well. The Department of Research & Publications has also published a few books and many more are lined up for release in future.

While forging new paradigms in management and Rural Development education, we are preparing new age professionals to cope up with the opportunities and threats posed by the new economy. I sincerely believe that XISS will continue to ascend to new heights, delivering to its customers the very best it has, and live up to their expectations, doing justice to the objectives it holds dear to itself."
