Department of Laws-Panjab University, Chandigarh was established in 1889, re-established at Shimla in 1948, shifted to Jalandhar in 1950 and finally re-located at the university campus at Chandigarh in 1959. Law department formerly known as University Law College is committed to play an important role in the legal system of this university. Law graduates from the department are serving all over the country in the lower courts, High Courts and Supreme Court. The faculty of the department consists of 9 professors, 6 associate professors,7 assistant professors, 8 part-time teachers and many research scholars working on various research programs.

The placement-cum-counseling cell of this department has been established only in the new millennium for a great cause to serve. The main objective of the cell is to emphasize through a variety of programmes the learning of skills in the legal education curriculum. The cell endeavors to produce lawyers with sense of social responsibility who can face new challenges posed to the legal profession from time to time. The main objective of the placement-cum-counseling cell is to provide career counseling and guidance regarding various avenues available about academics and placements.
