Engineering seats have no takers in West Bengal

In West Bengal around 6,238 engineering seats are lying vacant after the second round of counselling and the reasons are manifold. Experts believe that the primary reason is the increasing number of private engineering colleges that stands at 79. This is a sharp increase from around 2,200 vacancies last year from 73 private engineering colleges. The total number of engineering seats in West Bengal is about 28,100 compared to 24,000 last year. The IIT Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for 2011 is to be held on April 10th .  IIT Kanpur will be in charge of JEE 2011. The Undergraduate students of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), from the computer science and information science branches, will have a new syllabus from this academic year. A panel of the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has recommended that 70 percent weightage be given to Class 12 marks and 30 percent to marks obtained in an aptitude test conducted more than once a year for the Indian Institute of Technology - Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE ). KEA counters fresh problems on engineering seats

A day after the state department of higher education resolved the issue of obtaining approvals for the existing 167 engineering colleges from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), it has encountered a fresh problem.
