Board exam scores expected to get a weightage in IITJEE

With an aim to revamp the engineering entrance examination commencing in 2013-14 as well as launch a completely new version of JEE 2013 (Joint Entrance Examination), the IIT directors will take some major decisions by this month end. The IIT directors will decide on major issues such as current examination format, single all-India entrance exam for IITs as well as other engineering institutes in India, and decide on the weightage to be assigned to board exam scores, advanced knowledge and aptitude.

T.Ramasami committee has worked for months on formulating a report on an ““Alternative System for admission into engineering colleges”. The report has finally been submitted by the committee to Human Resource Development Ministry last month.

Let us have a look at the important points highlighted by T.Ramasami Committee in the report:

Normalization of Scores

Most of the experts agree on the decision to make school exam board scores an important factor for selection in the engineering institutes. Accepting board exam scores is important for curbing students’ dependence on coaching centers for cracking IITJEE as well as attracting more talented students to join IITJEE. However, there have been repeated doubts on whether the marks assigned by different boards can be normalized.

Ramasami Committee in its report concluded that normalization of exam board scores was quite feasible. The committee asked the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) to explore normalization methodologies for 4 boards – CBSE, ICSE/CISCE, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu Board. The Results of the pilot test conducted by ISI helped the committee to conclude that it was very much possible to normalize the percentile ranks across boards and ISI should be encouraged further to formulate a methodology for extending it to all other boards.

Online Survey

  • For revamping JEE, the T.Ramasami report conducted the an online survey and found out:
  • 85% or more were in favor of all-India single entrance test for admission in an engineering college and wanted reforms.
  • 70% favored single entrance exam with provisions for testing both advanced knowledge and aptitude.
  • 66% were in favor of factoring in school board scores.
  • 34% disavoured the inclusion of school scores due to fear of non-uniformity across school boards.

Recommendationsof Committee:

  • JEE should consider a mix of school board scores and national test score to select students.
  • An expert committee should interact with ISI to work on the methodology of normalizing board scores.
  • IITs should help set a question paper for National Screening Test based on objective examination models and conduct the examinations for the year 2012-13
  • A global agency’s help should be sought for holding the aptitude examination.

The committee has submitted its recommendations in the report and now the ball is in the court of IIT directors.
